Procession of the Epitaphios

The Epitaphios is the embroidered cloth placed within a graceful wooden bier which is carried
through the streets during processions on Good Friday and it is a key part of Easter celebrations.
The carved biers are very beautiful and often resemble something like a small canopy bed,
borne on the shoulders of the faithful. The biers are often covered with flowers
which have been strung together and put on it by the members of the church congregation
in the sanctuary itself, where they may stay up most of the night creating the decorations and polishing the wood.
This is also a way of keeping vigil prior to the formal start of the observances.
